Well, it's not every day that you find out that you won a truly competitive international award, but today? I DID.
(Fun fact: I actually won it several years ago and somehow missed the congratulations.)
Fearless Photographers is, in their words, "a unique directory of the world's best wedding photographers who are not afraid to push the limits of professional wedding photography to surprise you with extraordinary wedding photos of your wedding day."
But I've had the utmost respect for Fearless Photographers for years and been endlessly inspired by the creative work of the other Fearless photographers. I've learned so much about making striking photographs and moving wedding photojournalism simply from being a part of the community, and to have my image included alongside this genuinely humbling, talented collection of international photographers puts such a huge smile on my face, and probably will for the next month.
I don't know who to say "Thank You" to, but I want to say it to somebody, and such a huge part of it goes to all of the clients over the years who have trusted me to document one of the biggest days of theirs lives. But I also can't leave out my husband, Steve, who has unfailingly pushed and encouraged me, even when I wanted to quit wedding photography for good.
Geez, this is starting to sound like I think I won an Academy Award or something. Moving on.
Wedding photojournalism has certainly become a bit of a buzzword in the industry, but the candid side of wedding photography is my first love when it comes to this job. The juxtaposition of beautiful settings with quirky moments and the mix of a highly choreographed day with spontaneity and the unexpected have always delighted me. I love how photography takes those tiny, unplanned moments and makes them into entire stories, about how we care for and interact with the people we love... like sisters who will clean lipstick off your teeth.
I love what I do. I really, really, really love it.
